Iron Chef Lab Report

Tooth Decay and Bacteria in Mouth
Introduction: For this unique lab students were given a box with a mystery ingredient and my lab group had coca cola and a green juice smoothie. Next we had to come up with a very peculiar lab and include all the parts we would need like supplies, research, steps, etc. on our own. We came up with weighing human teeth over the span of 15 days and putting them in different drinks. We also measured the bacteria growth in a person's mouth when they swished listerine, coca cola and a green juice smoothie.

Purpose: We wanted to do this because about one third of americans drink soda everyday which does not have a good effect on teeth. So we were curious about what would happen to teeth left in soda?

Hypothesis: If 15 human teeth are placed in a cup of coca cola, green juice, water, coffee and lemon juice (3 for each beverage) for 14 days, then the tooth that was in the cup of coca cola will have the largest increase in weight because the coca cola contains the most corn syrup, which can cause a lot of plaque and buildup on teeth if not brushed frequently.

Materials:
  • 15 Teeth

  • 15 Plastic cups

  • 6 tablespoons of Coca Cola soda

  • 6 tablespoons of liquid coffee

  • 6 tablespoons of listerine

  • 6 tablespoons of water

  • 6 tablespoons of green smoothie

  • 1 Scale

  • Gloves

  • Measuring cups

Procedure:
  1. Fill 3 small plastic cups with 2 tablespoons of Coca Cola
  2. Repeat the first step, but instead of filling the cup with the soda, use the water, listerine, Bolthouse drink, and coffee
  3. Dry each tooth gently with a paper towel and then weigh each tooth before they are placed into the liquid, record the number in the chart created below on the doc and take pictures of the teeth.edx
  4. Place one tooth in each of the 15 cups
  5. Wait 24 hours and then weigh each tooth to see how the beverage affected it
  6. Record the new weight of the tooth and put it back into the same cup it came from
  7. Weigh each tooth every day for 2 weeks and record all weights in the table below.

Unit Assessment: Nutrition
Throughout the nutrition unit there are three key skills the social and economic implements in the typical grocery store, how the government has affected American's eating habits and the trail of processing living organisms take to get to our plate.

During this unit I have learned about all the social and economic implements in the grocery store. An article we read in class stated, "Groceries nationwide use the same basic layout principles to create a general flow to their stores," (Learning House Admin). All through the article the author elaborates about various types of implications that grocery managers have installed to help the customer strategically maneuver through each aisle and spend more money. Also when we went on our grocery store field trip we got to use our knowledge gained from the article we had read and mentally and visually apply it to the real store.

When I first walked into Safeway the first thing I saw were apples and berries.
Also each aisle in Oliver's was placed just as the article stated.
When I first walked in the store I realized that there were flowers and produce right when you walk in like the article said. Also often the 'kids products' were right at the eye level of an average child so that kids will beg their parents as the author had stated causing the parent to spend more money and the store to gain more profits. After understanding and seeing the layout of the grocery store with my recently gained knowledge it has helped me be more aware of the layout and shop more strategically.

I have also expanded my knowledge on how the government has affected the American diet.
In the documentary we watched Forks Over Knives one of the farmers explains that since the dairy company is so immense and provides prodigious amounts of money for the government they do not want to get rid of it in school lunches or stop advertising it as healthy. They spend enormous amount of money per year to advertise that milk is good by using celebrities or cartoon characters so that kids grow up to think that milk is beneficial for the body, when in reality it is not.

Lastly the next topic I learned about is how much processing it takes for living organisms to get to our plat or local grocery store. In the informational text we read  The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan he wrote, "Most of the antibiotics sold in America today end up in animal feed, a practice that, it is now generally acknowledged (except in agriculture), is leading directly to the evolution of new antibiotic-resistant superbugs." (Pollen 78.) From this book I learned about how many antibiotics are given to cattle and chicken to prevent disease in their detrimental compact spaces they are obtained in. The book tells the overall story about how if the animal or crop is fed or raised with so many processed items it will harm our body, the environment and the actual living organism. If we put processed or canned foods with many added ingredients our body will not use the energy right and this process was explained in our making ATP lab.
For this see did a lab using baking materials to represent the process of making ATP. To see more go to the link http://poncedignote16.blogspot.com/p/science-notes.html and go to since notes.

Overall after this unit I have gained greater knowledge on how the body uses each part of the food we eat, social and economical implications in all grocery stores and the unnatural process most living organisms take to get to the grocery store or your plate.
