Tip #1 Dialogue tags
- a dialogue tag is the bit you put before or after the dialogue
- example he said, she asked , I replied
Tip #2 Realistic doesn't mean real
- eliminate the ums and hesitations
- not supposed to be a transcript
Tip #3 Give the character a distimncr speech pattern
Think About:
- age
- gender
- social background
- education level
- geographical area
- catchphrases
Tip #4 Get in late leave early
- you dont have to begin the convo at the first word and end the last
- example: when on phone do not include hi how are you
Tip #5 punctuate your dialogue correctly
- begin on a new line for each new speacker
- have double or single quotation marks
- have punctuation inside dialogue
- end dialogue line w comma if going to add more dialogue
Tip#6 In a novel dialogue should do one or all of the following
- reveal characters relationships
- move story foward
- increase tension
- develop underlying emotion of a character and their traits
Passive vs Agressive Voice
- Active voice means that the subject is doing the action
- Identify subject to help
- Ex tucker loves coffee
- Passive means that the subject is receiving the action
- Ex coffee is loved by tucker
- Coffee becomes subject but isn't doing anything
- BY= red flag
- Switching from passive to active
- Look for word by, often appears in passive sentences
- Ex the girl was attacked by the dog. Fixed: the dog attacked the girl

General info
8-11 sentence depending on number of quotes
2 quotes = 8 sent.
Begin w a topic sent
End w conclusion sentence
Must be written in 3rd person
Don't mention points you can't support
